As our ministry grows we are tracking the total number of chickens (and turkeys) that we barbecue on our grill.  The more chickens grilled, the less hunger in our community.

beginnings

Grill for God began quietly.  In Fall 2008, a group of Harvey Holding's Inc. employees cooked hotdogs and hamburgers for Priority House, a Statesville men’s shelter.  The experience was such that a discussion ensued about not just feeding people physically, but also spiritually.  Jeff Harvey, President of Harvey Holding's Inc. (parent company to Holland Transfer Company, Statesville Distribution Services, and Holland TMS) began researching grilling options (his neighbor is a semi-pro grill master).

Due to an unexpected event, a van was offered to HHI for sale and plans for a custom grill were already in the works.  God was bringing this ministry together.  In the spring of 2009, a test-run was made at Holland Transfer Company, and 36 grilled chickens were prepared to employees.  It was a success.

Then a second test-run was made a few weeks later in conjunction with a Holland TMS yard sale.  We cooked and sold 36 chickens this time, and raised funds for the newly formed HHI ministry team.

This is obviously written after-the-facts and God has really blessed our efforts to share our time and resources with the hungry.  We've fed people at shelters, held fundraisers, and brought a smile to many faces by providing a simple meal.

We look forward to what the future holds and hope to see you at our next event!

amigos en el ministerio

We cooked 68 whole chickens for Iglesia de Dios Nuevo Filadelfia, a recently developed Hispanic church in Statesville.  Great turn-out for this fundraiser and Pastor Sifredo Rivera could not have been more pleasant to work with. We helped them raise funds to further their ministry to Statesville's growing Hispanic community. The prayer of blessing that they prayed for us before we left remind's us still that all Christians are unified by faith in Jesus Christ. Gloria a dios! (Glory to God!)

An interesting thing happened as we prepared for this fundraiser... On the day before the cook out, while seasoning the chickens,we discovered that we were short on flatware for the event.  Jeff and Gene had been looking for plastic forks, knives, and spoons packaged together at the supermarket and did not find them.  At the exact moment we realized we were short, Cody (Supervisor at Holland Transfer Co.) came around the corner with a pallet of Wendy’s pre-packaged plastic-ware that had just been released to us.  God came through at just the right time!

god is in control

We cooked 12 chickens, 32 hamburgers, and 16 hotdogs for My Sister's House, a local women's shelter and served approximately 15 adults and 12 children. We count ourselves so lucky to be able to serve this ministry that provides such hope.

Of special significance at this event; the gas stove had accidentally been left on during the night at the shelter. When we arrived around 7:10AM the house was filled with propane, and everyone was still asleep - lethargic from the gas.  Only God knows what would have happened had we not scheduled to be there that day.  It reminded us all that God is in conrol and will protect us.  We later provided them with two detectors to prevent any further propane gas-related scares.
